It’s been retired for awhile, but I always knew that I would bring Creativity Prompts back once I had more time to allow for a third post each week.  With my job winding down as the call center gets ready to close, more time is on the horizon, so it’s the perfect time to start it up again.  It’s the return of creativity prompts.

The Beginning

Friday Creativity Prompts started because I needed some inspiration for a post.  When I was young, I used to hate being told to write what I know.  I know a lot (or is it that I’m a know it all?)  I always thought it was the worst way to tell me to write anything.  So over the years, I found different ways to start writing.  First, of course, is to keep a notebook–which has come in handy over the years.  But sometimes that well runs dry when I’ve either used everything or nothing intrigues me at that point in time.  So I started looking online for inspiration.  And except for quotes–which start a lot of my Wednesday Whoa posts–I don’t find much that interests me.

There are a lot of story prompts, usually a first line or a scene which you then continue writing.  But I’m not really looking for story prompts and anyway, this is the exact opposite of write what you know.  Now it’s too specific.  I’m looking for something that falls in between the two.  I’m done with searching and finding blog prompts that tell me to describe the contents of my purse.  Definitely not what I’m looking for in a creativity prompt!

Because I couldn’t find what I wanted, I decided to create it myself.  Each week you will find a picture, or a quote or a title or something else that I hope you will use as a springboard for your art–whether that’s a blog post, a story, a painting, a poem or some form of mixed media art. If it turns into a full piece for you or is just practice to keep the creative juices flowing, I hope you have fun with it.

The Return

This week I’m posting a picture of a tree.  I love trees, not just because they look pretty or because they give us oxygen, but because I see human expression or figures looking back at me when I look at trees.  I see the Ent that is hiding in plain sight protecting all the other trees.  For years, I used to drive past a tree that was dying, but it didn’t look sad, it looked like it was dancing.  I saw that tree every day while I was sitting at a stop light on my commute.  Every time that I saw it, I told myself I needed to come back with a camera to capture the pure joyfulness of dance that this tree was reflecting. Eventually, the tree was cut down and it was such a shock to me.  I decided that I wouldn’t wait to take pictures of those trees that intrigued me.  The below is one of those pictures, it’s a tree that was on the route that I would take to visit my husband when he was in the hospital a few years ago.  Who do you see?

I’ll be sharing what I create in my newsletter.  I hope you’ll share with me as well.  You can do that through the comments or share it online through your own post or website and then link back to this page so I can see what you’ve created.  You can keep it to yourself too, but I hope you share. I’ll be sharing my pieces through my newsletter.  If you are interested in seeing more, you can sign up below.
