Anyone who stops learning is old,
whether at twenty or eighty.
Anyone who keeps learning stays young.
Henry Ford
There are plenty of reasons to continue schooling. To get an advanced degree. To get an additional certification. Just because it’s fun. There can also be reasons why schooling isn’t the right choice at the moment. You have other obligations outside of work like children or elder care. But DON’T EVER let the reason why you’re not going back to school be because you are too old. You are never too old to return to school.
You are never too old to learn a new career. One of my friends and one my nieces went back to school to study nursing. They were in their 50’s. There are plenty of documented instances where people in their 80’s and 90’s went back to college and got degrees. Why not you? And now there are so many ways in which to go back to school, including online versions. There is a schooling opportunity that is perfect for your needs no matter what you want to study.
Look at Amelia. She returned to school after ten years as a Travel Agent and she’s doing it while she has two young children. What’s holding you back from beginning again?
If you’re curious about what it’s like returning to school when you’re older, here’s an article from Michelle Willens, What It’s Like To Be A Middle-Aged College Student.
I think we should all keep learning – you’re never too old to learn something new. It’s really good for your mind too – keeps your sharp and active.
Yes. Keeping our minds sharp is an important reason to keep learning something new.
I agree, never stop learning! I’m satisfied with my BA, but this year I’m focusing on attending conferences, speakers, workshops and even one-on-one learning experiences relating to my passion. I’m loving it!
That’s great. Learning is fun and interesting especially when you’re passionate about it.
Completely agree. If you’re not growing, you’re regressing.
Oh yes, you’re never too old to learn – our local WEA courses are full of people of all ages eagerly learning! Even watching quiz programmes on TV – you are gathering knowledge all the time ?
Yes and quiz shows make learning fun.
I have gone back to school twice as an “older” student. I started my first nursing degree at 30, then returned to get my Bachelor’s when I was in my 40’s. Who knows what I may end up doing in my 50’s and 60’s??
Getting a degree in German? ???
Yikes! Maybe by the time I am 70…
Oh come on. I bet no longer than 65!
🙂
So funny. I just wrote about the same thing. We never want to stop learning.
I love it. Great minds? I guess it’s great minds understand the value of continuing to learn new things.
Couldn’t agree more! One of my favourite sayings is Every Day Is A School Day. Love it. thanks
I like that. I like it when I learn something new. I even say, “I learned something new today.” Guess that’s just a reinforcement to my brain that learning something new keeps it young and strong!
I got my degree at 38 so absolutely agree that later life learning is not only possible but gives you a greater focus. I returned to education because I wanted to, not because I had to or because it was expected of me. Every day’s a school day!
That’s fantastic! Dare I say it? Maturity does bring better focus. We have a better understanding of what we want to do and also that time if fleeting, which spurs us on!
I spent a year taking a graduate program in hypnotherapy and regression, so I think I am solid for at least while!
You are solid. I’ve never thought of you as old.
I’ve actually been considering this very thing. If money weren’t an object, I’d enroll in law school. I wouldn’t even care that I’d probably be old enough to be everyone’s mother!
I think you have a few more years to go, but in RI the waiver starts at 60.
If I could be a professional student, I would! I have done the back to school thing more than once. In between those efforts – and still – I read, take classes, do webinars, etc. I love learning. There are loads of free things to do when cost is an obstacle.
I love online learning. It’s so convenient and there is so much to learn!
Lifelong learning… I am a believer in that…nice post…?
Thanks for stopping by.
